National Museum of Egyptian Civilization to open mummification, afterlife halls with digital displays

By:ahramonline

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is preparing to open two new exhibition halls dedicated to mummification and the ancient Egyptian concept of the afterlife, integrating modern digital technologies to enhance the visitor experience.

Centred on the themes of mummification and the afterlife, the new spaces aim to give visitors a deeper and more engaging understanding of ancient Egyptian beliefs.

By combining original artefacts with digital storytelling, the museum seeks to present one of history’s most important civilizations in a more vivid and accessible way while preserving its authenticity.

The Mummification Hall is expected to become one of the museum’s main educational spaces. It will complement the Royal Mummies Hall, which houses 12 ancient Egyptian royal mummies transferred five years ago from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to NMEC.

The new hall will display artefacts, tools, and explanatory materials that highlight the scientific and spiritual aspects of mummification. It aims to offer a clear narrative that helps visitors understand the rituals that shaped ancient Egyptian views of the afterlife, especially as NMEC is home to the royal mummies.

A second hall will focus on the ancient Egyptian concept of the afterlife using modern technology. This immersive space will incorporate virtual reality (VR) and other digital tools, allowing visitors to explore ancient beliefs more interactively. Through digital simulations, visitors will be able to experience key stages of the journey to the afterlife.

Eltayeb Abbas, CEO of NMEC, said the new halls are designed to present ancient Egyptian civilization in a way that connects with modern audiences.

“By combining strong historical content with immersive technologies, we are not only preserving our heritage but also rethinking how it can be experienced, making every visit both educational and memorable,” he said.
