Egypt’s UHI facilities perform over 865,000 advanced surgeries

By:The Egyptian Gazette

The affiliated facilities of Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA), in governorates where the Universal Health Insurance (UHI) system is being carried out, have successfully performed more than 865,000 surgical procedures and medical interventions, EHA announced on Monday.

The operations were carried out across 43 hospitals and medical complexes in Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and Aswan, in line with the highest international standards and with notable success rates, reflecting a significant advancement in surgical services within Egypt’s healthcare system.

EHA Chairman, Ahmed El-Sobky, who is also UHI General Supervisor, stated that the milestone underscores the marked progress in the quality of surgical care provided to beneficiaries.

He noted improvements in the diversity and complexity of procedures, as well as in treatment outcomes, which are now comparable to global benchmarks.

The procedures conducted span a broad spectrum of advanced and highly specialised interventions, including general surgery, orthopaedics and joint replacements, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, neurosurgery, microsurgery, advanced endoscopic procedures, and cardiac catheterisation, El-Sobky explained.

Services also include advanced techniques such as TAVI, coronary artery bypass grafting for chronic coronary occlusions, and EVAR and TEVAR procedures for minimally invasive aortic repair, in addition to kidney and liver transplants, demonstrating the Authority’s full readiness to manage complex and critical cases using the latest medical approaches.

El-Sobky further indicated that advanced surgical procedures account for more than 41% of total interventions, with a 20 per cent rise recorded in the second half of 2025 compared to the first half.

All procedures are conducted in fully equipped operating theatres by highly trained medical teams working in line with approved protocols and the latest international practices, ensuring optimal quality and patient safety.

He added that beneficiaries contribute a fixed co-payment of LE482, covering accommodation regardless of the actual cost of procedures, which may exceed LE1 million, thereby promoting equitable access to healthcare and reducing financial burdens on citizens.
