ENPA launches (Spot) as model for Egyptian websites

كتب:Ola Abdelrasheed - Senior editor / spot

Cairo - The Egyptian National Press Authority (ENPA) launched (Spot) a new news website few weeks ago, dedicated to improving other national press websites by providing a model to follow.
‘It is the first Egyptian national press’ website using Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to detect interests of our followers’ said Sameh Abdallah Editor-in-Chief of the new website, ‘that would help us to provide a better service to our readers’.
(AI) is not the only new feature of (Spot), editors also were trained to pick photos based on specific rules to create an artistic homepage. Spot’s special Storytelling Videos are also a remarkable feature focusing on the bright side of Egyptian’s everyday life.
Spot’s mobile application is under construction, according to the Editor-in Chief of the website and will be available within weeks as soon as certain technical issues are resolved.
(ENPA) is a constitutional governmental body manages all Egyptian state-owned print and online media outlets. It was created in 2014 to replace Ministry of Information. The New, then, Egyptian Constitution, established (ENPA) among 3 independent bodies to manage all types of media. According to Law No. 179 of 2018, the National Press Authority is responsible for:
1-    Controlling the economic and administrative performance of state-owned press organizations.
2-    Appointing the heads of the boards of directors of the state-owned press organizations, the editors of the publications issued by these organizations, and the websites, and their accountability in the event of a defect or failure in performance according to the plan adopted by the National Press Authority. The Authority may dismiss officials responsible for administrating or editing when a defect in performance has been proved, in accordance with the conditions that it establishes.
3-    Approving state-owned press organizations to establish companies either alone or in association with others to undertake economic or investment activities that do not conflict with their purposes.
4-    Incorporating state-owned press organizations and merge and abolish press releases within a single organization.
5-    Appointing members of the general assemblies of state-owned press organizations.
(ENPA) receives financial resources from several sources, mostly the state budget, and 5% of the profits of state-owned press organizations, in addition to loans, grants and donations.
The National Press Authority manages the following organizations and their publications:
•    Al Ahram Establishment - Akhbar Al Youm - Dar El Tahrir - Middle East News Agency - Dar Al Hilal - Rose Al Yousef Foundation - Dar Al Maaref - Elkawmiah Distribution Company.

According to Abdallah, Spot will go through a long term, multi-phase plan before reaching its final shape as a model for other websites. During this period several training courses will be organised in (ENPA) premises to prepare national press’ journalists for the new features they will be dealing with soon. Several hundreds of Egyptian journalists will be targeted to participate in such courses.
